Send GitLab notifications to a channel

How-toFor adminsReviewed Guides: API and webhooks

GitLab can post its events into a Freesbe channel today, through GitLab’s own Slack notifications setting. Freesbe’s incoming webhooks take the same messages Slack does, so GitLab only needs a Freesbe URL instead of a Slack one. It works on GitLab.com and on your own GitLab server. You need to be a Freesbe owner or admin, and a Maintainer of the GitLab project (or an Owner of the group).

  1. Make the channel first, such as #deploys, and add the people who should see the alerts.
  2. Open Workspace settings → Integrations & apps → Webhooks → Incoming and click Add incoming webhook.
  3. Name it GitLab, pick the channel and copy the Webhook URL. It’s shown once.
  1. In GitLab, open the project (or the group, to cover all its projects) and go to Settings → Integrations → Slack notifications.
  2. Turn on Active and tick the events you want. A good start is Pipeline (with Notify only broken pipelines), Merge request, Deployment and Tag push.
  3. Paste the Freesbe URL into Webhook. Leave Username empty, or type GitLab.
  4. Leave the channel fields empty. Freesbe posts into the channel the webhook was made for, so to split events across channels, make one webhook per channel and one GitLab setting per project or group.
  5. Click Test settings, then Save changes.

Each event shows as a message from GitLab with links to the pipeline, merge request or issue, and a coloured card for pipelines: green when it passes, red when it fails.

  • Nothing arrives. Check the webhook isn’t Off in Freesbe, and that the URL in GitLab is the whole URL. On your own GitLab server, the server must be able to reach https://api.freesbe.net.
  • Too many messages. Untick Push and Job events, and tick Notify only broken pipelines and Notify only default branch.
  • GitLab says the Slack notifications setting is deprecated. GitLab plans to replace it with its own Slack app, but the setting still works and has no removal date.
